Fire Safety Engineering
Recent large fires in residential and industrial complexes across the UAE and the region have
triggered a need for education about fire safety and code compliance in building design,
construction and maintenance, especially in high-rise buildings and industrial facilities.
In collaboration with Sharjah Civil Defense Authority, the American University of Sharjah (AUS) has
developed this certificate program to address these needs. The program is designed to enhance the
knowledge and expertise of consultants, contractors, engineers, architects, and regulatory officials
in fire safety and hazard assessment.
Detailed Description
What Participants Gain (Program Outcomes):
By completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Apply the latest advances in the field of active and passive fire protection systems and risk
assessment for enhanced fire safety. - Describe fire behavior and fire resistance evaluation through testing and calculation methods.
- Apply theoretical and practical aspects of engineering fire safety in buildings, infrastructures
and industrial facilities. - Describe the fundamentals of fire dynamics from ignition to flame spread.
- Describe chemical fires and explosions
- Manage process risk and control of process hazards
- Apply above knowledge in Fire and Life Safety code compliance in building designs, installation
and maintenance.

- Practicing design engineers and architects (government and private)
- Fire-fighting contractors
- Government (local/state) regulatory and building officials
- Scientists and officers from government
- R&D organizations and ministries
Program Prerequisites (Any of the following):
- Bachelor/Master of Science in Engineering: Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Electromechanical,
- Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or any other related field.
- Bachelor/Master of Science in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, or any other related
field. - 3-5 years of experience in Fire and Life Safety industry as designers, engineers, contracting,
engineers, installation engineers. - 5-8 years of experience in Fire and Life Safety industry as technicians.
Program Structure
To successfully complete the program and earn the Certificate of Completion, participants must:
- Attend all four modules in full.
- Pass the final exam.
- Note: Participants who do not pass one or more modules of the final exam may retake the failed
module exams up to two times during the final exam session without additional fees.
Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion signed by the American
University of Sharjah (AUS) and the Sharjah Civil Defense Authority.
Program Cost: Total per participant (4 Modules + Final Exam): AED 2,200 + 5% VAT
